The spindle, rotated via a pulley (3) or directly by a motor, consists of an axle (1) in bearings (4), with a clamp (7) in between the bearings. The clamp is actuated by a ring (11) which is itself controlled by a pressure fluid so as to prevent any friction between high-speed components. The ring (11), which turns at the same speed as the axle, is located concentrically with the axle and is able to move axially relative to it. The clamp jaws are made from tempered or case-hardened steel, hard metal or steel with a hard outer coating, and the ring (11) holds them in a centred position by means of four pegs (12).
