PURPOSE: To quickly and accurately discriminate current paper money. CONSTITUTION: The master pattern of a paper money 17 is obtained in such a way by a first method that one standard paper money 17 is scanned a plurality of number of times and the mean value of the data samples corresponding to the scanned results is obtained. The mean value is stored in a discriminating device as the master pattern of the paper money 17. Then the master pattern of the note 17 is obtained by a second method in such a way that a plurality of real paper money 17 having standard qualities are scanned and the master pattern is generated from the mean value of a plurality of obtained elemental patterns by averaging the elemental patterns. Thereafter, the master pattern of paper money 17 is obtained by a third method in such a way that, after elemental patterns are obtained by scanning one or more new paper money and another elemental patterns are obtained by scanning one or more used paper money, the elemental patterns are averaged and the master pattern is obtained from the mean value. |
