The apparatus records the television broadcast signal or external image signal at various recording speeds with 8 video heads, and its maximum recording compression ratio is 6 times so as to record 12 hour video programm on a 2 hour video tape. It comprises. a drum assembly(120) in which standard speed play mode heads(CH11,CH12), 1/2 times or 1/3 times speed play heads(CH21, CH22), 1/6 times speed heads(Ch31,CH32), and 2 times speed play heads(CH41,CH42) are equidistantly arranged; a servo mechanism(100) generating signals for controlling play mode switches(4,114,124) and head change switches(16,18,116,118) when playing the signals recorded on the video tape.
