Treating metal-bearing slurry comprises the following: (a) the slurry is dried and exhaust gases are sepd. from solids and drawn off; (b) the dried slurry from (a) is heat treated, the slag formed is discharged and dust-contg. gases are drawn off; (c) coarse particulate from the gases in stage (b) is sepd. and fed to the slurry drying stage (a) together with a proportion of the gases sepd. from the coarse particulate; (d) the remaining gases from stage (c) are sepd. from the (d) contained fine solids and discharged and the fine solids are extracted as product; (e) the solids sepd. in stage (a) are returned to the drying stage (a).
