A linear guide unit consists of a guide rail (1) having a plurality of roll body tracks (3), a guide carriage that is mounted for longitudinal displacement on the guide rail (1) by means of roll bodies and that has a fixing surface facing away from the guide rail (1) and a damping element that is arranged in front of or behind the guide carriage in the direction of displacement and that takes the form of a slide (4) encompassing the guide rail (1) and with it forming a damping gap (7). The inner contour of the slide (4) runs essentially parallel to the profile of the guide rail (1). The slide (4) also has a fixing surface (5) facing away from the guide rail (1). The invention provides that the damping gap (7) is completely filled with an electrorheological liquid, the guide rail (1) and the slide (4) forming an electrode pair which is connected to an electrical voltage source (11) for generating an electrical field to control the viscosity of the fluid. Alterning the applied voltage enables one to change the viscosity of the liquid in the damping gap (7) and thus the damping behavior of the slide (4).
