The primary part comprises an input shaft (2) for taking up the steering wheel torque, a servo unit (3) and an output shaft (4) for the amplified steering wheel torque. It drives a secondary part via a gear and which exerts the steering forces on the wheels of the vehicle. The servo unit comprises an elastic member (22) connecting the input shaft with the output shaft and a controlled auxiliary drive acting on the output shaft. The relative rotation between the input shaft and the output shaft is measured by a torque sensor (26,29,31) and fed to a control device (8) which regulates the action of the auxiliary drive. This drive takes place via an auxiliary gearwheel (37) arranged on the output shaft, to which it is connected via a further elastic member (38).
