<p>An apparatus and method for treating chemical production plant process condensate (2) such that a contaminant-rich stream (40) and a relatively pure aqueous stream (22) is separately recoverable from the condensate (2), wherein the contaminants are substantially removed from the condensate (2) by steam stripping (8) and subsequent rectification (10) in a relatively low pressure stripping/rectification tower (6). The tower overhead (24) is then condensed (26) with a portion (38) of the condensed overhead (34) being returned to the top of the rectification section (10) of the tower (6) as reflux (38) and the balance being withdrawn as a concentrated stream (40) for reuse in the plant. In a second embodiment, separate stripping (108) and rectification (110) towers operate in series whereby the overhead (109) of the stripping tower (108) is delivered to the lower section of the rectification tower (110) and the rectification bottoms (112) are returned to the top of the stripping tower (108).</p> |
