The compress assembly consists of an elastic pad (3) which is fitted to the inside (4) of a support plate (5) using a chain (14) round the outside of the plate (6,5) to fix and tension the pad to the pipeline (2) leak (1) by a clamp (7). A slip preventer (19) fitted to the outside (6) of the plate consists of a saddle complete with chain (14) eyelet. The link chain is fixed at one end to the clamp or plate, using the clamp to hook releasably into the chain links for the tensioning operation. The tensioned sector of the chain includes an integrated tensile spring (18). The support plate is made of sheet metal and is cylindrically curved. The pad is made of foam material and its coating according to chemical or mechanical conditions at the site. The constant thickness of the pad lies pref. within the range 20-80mm. The preventer is thin enough to fit in between pipe and wall (20).
