When used as a passive ship's rudder, the wheel body (2) is fixed. The vanes, originating from control units through a gearing, are aligned in the direction of the ship's longitudinal axis and the necessary rudder deflections are transmitted to the vanes. When used as an active manoeuvring component, the centre shaft (4/1) of the gearing and the sun-wheel (4), corresponding to the desired thrust direction, which is variable around 360 deg. are aligned, and the wheel body is rotated so that the operation of the gearing of the vanes produces movement relative to the surrounding water.
