A process for the inhibition of the formation, growth, and/or agglomeration of hydrates in the body of a fluid comprising water and a gas, in thermodynamic conditions such that hydration can occur. A water sol. co-polymer additive which contains hydrophobic gps. is incorporated. The hydrophobic portion of the cpd. comprises 0.5-70% of the total polymer mass. The copolymer contains a polyoxyalkylene chain and is incorporated in the fluid at a concn. of 0.05-5 (more pref. 0.25-2)% relative to the water present. The gas comprises methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propene, n- and iso- butane, possibly H2S and/or CO2.
