A process and device are disclosed for cooling the area of a weld when laser welding metal sheets or metal strips, in particular for building car bodies in the automobile industry. The invention shows how to supply coolant and to create an inert gas veil between the focus and the liquid coolant so that the liquid coolant may not reach the area of the weld and negatively affect it.
