The invention is a warewasher comprising a wash chamber (10), a tank (20) at the bottom of the wash chamber (10), a heat exchange tube (50) entering the tank (20) through a first port in the tank (20), traversing the base of the tank (20), and exiting the tank (20) through a second port. The tube (50) is at a height such that it is submerged when the tank (20) is filled with wate r. The tube (50) has gas-fired infrared burner (60) located in the tube (50) to which a combustible fuel is supplied. By combusting the fuel and passing the combustion products through the tube (50), water in the tank (20) is heated.
