Operating illuminator of optical therapeutical and/or diagnostic instrument

The illuminator (5) contg. instrument is secured to a support system and contains a distance detector for a continuous determination of a spacing between the patient and instrument. If a presettable min. spacing is detected, the illuminator is operated with a reduced power, or completely switched-off. Pref. an ultrasonic distance sensor is used for a continuous distance detecting, or an autofocus system of the instrument. A reduction of the supply voltage is used for the power reduction, or complete switch-off of the illuminator. An acoustic signal generator (16) emits an alarm signal, if the preset min. spacing is not reached.
