Tunnel evcavation is by a shield driving machine with face cutting tools. After an initial drive at the face the tools operate over one sector while the remaining sectors are supported by mechanical means. The tools operate inside a sector in a plane by reversing the swing direction and by radial movements in that area. Inside the shield (1) the tools consisting of a drum cutter (3) with an axis (26) parallel to the main shield axis (20), operate on the end of a swing arm (2) and can also move radially towards the centre (20) of the shield (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - More manoeuvrable and is better supported in any position of the cutter tools.
