NUCLEAR GAUGE WITH COMPENSATION FOR SAMPLE IRREGULARITIES

A neutron gauge (10) is described for determining the moisture content of a moisture containing material . Samples of the moisture containing material (21) are confined in a sample pan (17) and a sample cover (19) with sufficient neutron moderating activity is pressed against the sample. The cover (19), sample (21), and sample pan (17) are placed in the same location in the gauge (10) with respect to the neutron source and detector (32) for each measurement to compensate for volume variations in the sample. The sample can be weighed (35) to compensate for density variations. The sample pan cover (19) can include a cadmium sheet for direct contact with the sample (21) to shield the sample (21) from neutrons thermalized by the cover (19).
