The invention relates to a device for the automatic control of an operating head of a cutter, to form externally corrugated pieces of tubes. The device includes: - a detector of the length of the tube with a bearing structure equipped with a freely rotating track; - a support of the detector fixed to the head of the cutter in such a way as to hold the track in alignment and in contact with the outer surface of the tube; - a transducer coupled with the track to detect the length of the tube received from the cutter; - a detector of the thickness of the tube, mounted on the support; - control means interfaced with the transducer, the detector of the thickness and the operating head in a such a way as to receive the signals, process them and to activate and disactivate the operating head.
