The invention concerns a vaccine composition to induce protective immunity against leishmania. The composition comprises a suitable amount of a recombinant BCG strain transformed with a DNA fragment including a DNA sequence encoding a fusion protein comprising beta -lactamase or a fragment thereof and the other membrane protein of leishmania, preferably an outer membrane protein of L.major, more preferably the gp63 protease of L.major. The vaccine composition is contained in a plasmid such as plasmid pIPS42 deposited at the CNCM on September 26, 1994 under the accession number I-1478. The invention also concerns a method for inducing protective immunity against L.major to a mammal. The method comprising administering to a mammal the composition described above.
