A mobile compaction unit for expanded plastics, partic. polystyrene, has a feed hopper (4) connected to a vertical pressing assembly (6), a horizontal pressing assembly (7), an hydraulic centre (2) and an output pipe (9) for compacted plastic (10) opening at one end of the unit. The unit rests on a rectangular cradle (11) such that it has longitudinally on the cradle the hopper (4), the hydraulic centre (2) and the output. An inclined feed conveyor (13) is positioned above the hydraulic centre (2). The compacted material output (10) is situated close to the expanded plastic input (14) and the hydraulic centre is sensibly at the centre of the cradle. The unit is approx. 6.4m long, 2.5m wide and less than 3m height and rests on a road transporter.
