A method of enclosing one or more optical fibre elements in a metal tube so that the or each is loosely housed within the tube, comprises the steps of: (i) passing a strip (1) of metal past one or more formers so that opposed longitudinally extending edge portions (2, 4) of the strip are bent out of the plane of the strip and the edge portions of the strip are brought together, thereby forming a tube having a longitudinally extending slit that is defined by the edge portions of the strip which stand up from the tube; (ii) introducing the or each optical fibre element (10) into the tube so formed; (iii) forming a seal between the upstanding edge portions of the strip; and (iv) folding the upstanding sealed edge portions against the tube. |
