The unit has a box (1) with alphanumeric displays (2,3), a keyboard (5), a printer (4) and various control buttons and switches (6-30). An external connector is provided to allow communication with a large scoreboard or an external computer. The unit is controlled by two microcontroller circuits. The microcontrollers are programmed so that one performs all the tasks associated with timing, while the other controls the internal operation of the unit, handling keyboard, printer, display and communications, in addition to handling non-timing aspects of scoring. The timing circuits respond to external signals such as those from photo-electric barriers, or to push buttons.
