Leak-detection system and method for detecting an individual leaking nuclear fuel rod having a radioactive material leaking therefrom. The system of the invention includes an enclosure surrounding the. fuel rod and fluid circulation means connected to the enclosure for circulating a fluid through the enclosure. In this manner, the fluid carries the leaking material from the fuel rod and through the circuit to a radiation-sensitive detector in communication with the circuit for detecting the quantity and intensity of the radioactive material carried by the fluid flowing in the circuit.
