The spanner incorporates a torque transmission element (20) which has a cylindrical body from which a spanner square (21) protrudes. The cylindrical body has an axially running V-shaped slot (23) which has a rounded cut-out (29) at the bottom of the V-shape. A V-shaped pawl (30) is mounted in the slot (23). The pawl has two arms (32a,32b) which include an angle which is smaller than the angle of the V-slot (23) so that it can move to-and-fro in the slot. The arms of the pawl have ratchet teeth (31a,31b) at their ends. A cylindrical rod (40) with spring-loaded pin (41) is mounted in the pawl so that it can pivot and move axially in the cylindrical body. The pin (41) will press radially against the inner edge of the pawl while the rod is rotated to engage the pin with one of the arms of the pawl and the teeth on that arm can engage with the teeth (101) in the ring-shaped head (10).
