A process and device are disclosed for controlling an EDM machine (37) with at least one input device and one computer. The required control data are subdivided, during and/or after input into a controller (35), on the one hand into object-oriented data, i.e. data that directly concern individual operations, and on the other hand into strategic data, i.e. data that concern the follow-up of the operations carried out by the machine. The object-oriented data and the strategic data are then differently processed.
