An improved medical laser treatment system (10) and method generate a beam of laser energy at a predetermined wavelength; transmit the beam of laser energy along a path (20) to a medical treatment site; deliver to the medical treatment site an insufflation gas (28) which is absorbent at the predetermined wavelength; and introduce into the path of the beam of laser energy a non-absorbent purge gas (32) which is transparent to the predetermined wavelength of the laser (16), at a flow rate for opposing the influx of insufflating gas to reduce the resonant absorption of the laser beam energy.
