A sheet metal fence comprises an upper panel (12) and a lower panel (10) secured to a horizontal rail separating them from each other. The rail is a sheet metal strip comprising an elongated web (1), a first flange (4) extending along one edge of the web and a shorter co-directed second flange (8) extending along the other edge of the web. The first flange has a longitudinally extending step (5) formed in it on which the upper panel may rest, and an upper part of the lower panel is resiliently held by and between the two flanges.
