The invention relates to a device on the lock (8) of a motor vehicle seatbelt for detecting whether the seatbelt has been put on, which device comprises according to the invention a circuit (2) with two parallel line branches (3, 4) with in each case resistors (R1, R2) which are of different sizes and are arranged therein. On both sides of the line branches (3, 4) change-over switches (5, 6) are arranged which are actuated mechanically in such a way that depending on whether the belts have been put on either the one line branch (3) or the other line branch (4) is connected into the circuit (2). The respective resistance value, and thus whether or not the belts have been put on, is determined in an evaluation unit (7). When a change-over switch (5, 6) fails, this corresponds to a break in the line which is detected by the evaluation unit (7) so that simple functional monitoring of the change-over switches (5, 6) is possible with the arrangement.
