<p>A catheter for long-term insertion into cavities, such as the male or female urethra etc. is made of an elastomer or plastomer. It is equipped with sections which give off metal ions (e.g. of Cu, Ag or Au) on contact with a body fluid, without interfering with the flexibility of the catheter. The metal ions kill bacteria which are likely to rise from the outside and cause severe infection. It saves the flushing out of bladder and catheter and other chemotherapeutic measures.</p> |
