A catalyst for producing linear low density polyethylene with a relatively narrower molecular weight distribution is described. The catalyst is formed by treating silica having reactive OH groups with a dialkylmagnesium in a solvent for said dialkyl magnesium; then adding to said solvent SiCl4 to form an intermediate which is subsequently treated with a transition metal to form a transition metal-containing intermediate. This transition metal-containing intermediate is then treated with n-butyl ether to form a catalyst precursor. The catalyst precursor is activated with triethylalumium.
