In the basic unit (11) of a telephone set, a display element (18) is mounted directly on a circuit board (15). This board (15) is generally used as a carrier of electronic components (16). An optical deflection element, for example a prism (22), directs the light coming from the display (18) in the direction of the eyes of the telephone user. The prism (22) has three surfaces, one surface (23) being approximately parallel to the display element (18), one surface (24) being aligned in the direction of the eyes of the user and the third surface (25) being used as total reflection surface.
