The invention relates to a copper oxide/zinc oxide/alyuminium oxide catalyst which contains, per 100 parts by weight of copper oxide, 40 to 130 parts by weight of zinc oxide, 2 to 50 parts by weight of aluminium oxide and 1 to 4 parts by weight of sodium oxide. It has a total surface area of 50 to 100 m<2>/g (according to BET). 75 to 95% of the total surface area is formed by pores having radii of 9 to 1,000 nm and the remaining surface area by pores having radii which are smaller than 9 nm.
