The invention concerns a navigation device for people, said device comprising: a navigation unit (1) which has a receiver device for the wireless transmission of data for detecting the current geographical position; a communication unit (2) which comprises an input unit (3), in particular for the input of a target position, and an output unit (5), in particular for the output of path guiding data; and a computer (6), in particular for route planning. The computer comprises a memory with at least one digitized road map (8) and can be connected for data transmission to the navigation unit (1) via the communication unit (2). According to the invention the navigation unit (1), the communication unit (2), the input unit (3) and the output unit (5) form a portable hardware unit (10) which is provided with its own power supply (9) and a transmitter-receiver unit (4). The computer (6) for calculating essential parts of the route plan is disposed in a stationary manner outside the portable unit (10) and is connected to a transmitter-receiver for the wireless transmission of route data between the computer (6) and the portable unit (10).
