System for counting the number of people waiting for a lift

A difference picture is produced using an input picture of people waiting in an environment and a reference picture of the environment with no people waiting. A partition mode test step divides the input picture into regions using brightness information from the input picture and the difference picture. Further steps use different methods to make two estimations of the number of regions corresponding to human heads. A waiting passenger number computation step uses these two estimations to calculate a figure for the number of waiting people.
