PURPOSE: To miniaturize a pulse transformer used to light a discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION: A current limiting element 3 and a pulse transformer 5 for generating high-voltage pulses are sequentially connected in series between a low-frequency AC power supply 2 and a discharge lamp 1. A capacitor C is connected in series between the current limiting element 3 and the pulse transformer 5, and a bypass coil L2 is connected in parallel with the capacitor C and the pulse transformer 5. Therefore, a short-circuit current is made to flow through the pulse transformer 5 only at the application of a high-voltage pulse to the discharge lamp 1; otherwise, as when the discharge lamp 1 is lighted, a lamp current, etc., is made to flow while bypassing the pulse transformer 5 by the capacitor C and the bypass coil L2 . Therefore, the need for using a large pulse transformer 5 with a large capacity is eliminated, resulting in the miniaturization of the pulse transformer 5. |
