PURPOSE: To obtain a sulfur-contg. polymer having a high refractive index and an improved clarity by reacting a specific sulfur-contg. compd. with an arom. dihalide in the presence of an org. amide solvent. CONSTITUTION: A sulfur compd. selected from among alkali metal (hydrogen) sulfides and H2 S is added to an org. amide solvent and dehydrated by heating to 100-204 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere under normal pressure. After the inside temp. of the system is reduced to a temp. in the range of from room temp. to 170 deg.C, an arom. dihalide is added to the system in a molar ratio of the halogen group of the dihalide to the sulfur atom of the sulfur compd. of 0.85-1.25 and reacted with the sulfur compd. at 140-300 deg.C for 0.5-12hr, thus giving a sulfur- contg. polymer which comprises 30-95mol% at least one kind of repeating units represented by formulas I to III [wherein R<1> to R<3> are each a 1-9C alkyl or optionally a substd. phenyl; (a) is the number of R<1> groups, being 0-4; (b) is the number of R<2> groups, being 0-4; and (c) is the number of R<3> groups, being 1-4] and 5-70mol% repeating units represented by formula IV and has 1,1':4',1":4",1'''-quaterphenylene structures in an amt. of 20mol% or lower based on the total repeating units and having a reduced viscosity of 0.2-9.7dl/g. |
