PURPOSE: To remove nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere without using heat energy and a reducing agent by irradiating an air contg. nitrogen oxides with ultraviolet rays in a specified temp. range by using zeolite or silica carrying silver ion as a photocatalyst and decomposing thereby the nitrogen oxides. CONSTITUTION: At first, silver nitrate and a carrier are stirred in an ammonia diluted water soln. to fix silver ions on the ion exchange site of the carrier. After the carrier on which silver ions are fixed is filtered, separated and dried, it is heated approximately at 500 deg.C under passing-through of air and in addition, it is heated approximately at 200 deg.C under vacuum to reduce partially the silver ions and to remove adsorbed gas and as the result, a photocatalyst is obtd. The effect of the action of this photocatalyst is in such a way that when the catalyst is put into a reaction cell made of a quartz connected with a vacuum apparatus and an air at atmospheric pressure contg. nitrogen monoxide is sealed in this reaction cell and it is irradiated with ultraviolet rays in the temp. range of -20 to 100 deg.C, nitrogen oxide is decomposed into N2 and O2 and/or N2 O. |
