PURPOSE: To suppress diffusion of cobalt hydroxide into a nickel hydroxide particle by covering the surface of a solid solution particle containing nickel hydroxide as the main component with a mixed crystal of a hydroxide of a specified metal and cobalt hydroxide. CONSTITUTION: The surface of a nickel hydroxide particle or solid solution particle is covered with a mixed crystal of magnesium hydroxide or zinc hydroxide and cobalt hydroxide. 0.5-50wt.% magnesium hydroxide and/or zinc hydroxide converted in metallic magnesium and zinc based on the total weight of cobalt, magnesium and/or zinc in the mixed crystal is contained in the mixed crystal. If the content is less than 0.5wt.%, diffusion of cobalt hydroxide into the active material is not effectively suppressed. If the contend exceeds 50wt.%, conductivity is decreased and a battery with high capacity cannot obtained.
