PURPOSE: To obtain an antacid composition comprising magnesium alginate and an antiacid material containing a composite Al-containing acid salt, and useful for treating the irritations of esophagus, stomach and intestines, such as regurgitant esophagitis. CONSTITUTION: This aqueous suspension antiacid composition not causing the 50% or more change of its viscosity over 12 weeks at a temp. from room temperature to 40 deg.C is obtained by mixing (A) an antiacid material containing a composite Al-containing acid salt preferably substantially comprising the reaction product of coprecipitated aluminum hydroxide/magnesium carbonate gel with magnesium alginate and preferably giving an acid-neutralizing ability of 1-3 mEq/ml to the composition with (B) magnesium alginate in an amount effective to obtain a viscosity of 400-800 cPs in an A:B component weight ratio of 1:1 to 2:1, and subsequently thermally reacting the mixture. The composition preferably further contains a substance, such as potassium bicarbonate, generating a non-toxic gas, when brought into contact with a gastric juice. |
