PURPOSE: To obtain the subject external agent useful for prophylaxis and treatment of skin keratinization, etc., and having extremely improved stability ofα-tocopheryl retinoate by compounding anα-tocopheryl retinoate together with a carboxyvinyl polymer. CONSTITUTION: This external agent is obtained by compounding (A) anα- tocopheryl retinoate (preferably, an ester of DL-α-tocopherol with all-trans- retinoic acid) together with (B) a carboxyvinyl polymer. A compounding ratio of the component A is preferably 0.01-2-wt.% and that of component B is preferably 0.001-5wt.%. Further, the external agent is optionally compounded with e.g. a humectant, an oil, a surfactant and a UV-absorbent.
