The method consists of the following stages (a) a first batch (12) of particulate material is subjected to pre-drying in a unit (16) to produce at least partially dried material, (b) this material is heated in a furnace (22) - with use of an excess of combustion air - to a temp. above the pre-drying temp., (c) the combustion prods. and water vapour of the stage (b) are fed into the stage (a), (d) to cool the heated material, it is mixed with a second batch (14) of particulate material, (e) the material thus cooled is further cooled in a unit (38) and is sepd. to produce a low-temp. particulate material.
