The pivot for the side door (1) comprises a lower ball and socket joint (14) and upper pivot. The upper pivot joint moves relative to the bodywork (19) during door opening to determine, with the ball joint centre (CR), a pivoting axis whose inclination varies during door opening. The upper pivot comprises a body (4), fixed to the door, having two spindles (8,9) engaged respectively in two grooves (23,24) in a horizontal plate (20) of a support fixed to the bodywork. The grooves form circular arcs of radius (R1-R3), each centred on a median point of the other groove. This causes the body to pivot successively , with the door , about each of the two spindles, being guided by the other spindle sliding in the associated groove.
