PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device, which is provided with a high contrast, a wide visual angle characteristic, high responsiveness, and large capacity display performance, by arranging a liquid crystal phase which is operated to display while a disclination line is generated. CONSTITUTION: On a TFD substrate 104 and an opposed substrate 107, an oriented film material, by which horizontal orienting ability for regulating a position of a liquid crystal molecule at a slight tilting angle of approximately 2 deg. without performing orienting process can be obtained, is applied and burnt without any following orienting process, and oriented films 108, 109 are formed. A liquid crystal layer 113 is a random orientation type liquid crystal layer, and nematic type liquid crystal material exhibiting regular dielectric anisotropy is used for the liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal display panel formed in this way is inserted between orthogonal polarizing plates 201, 202 and is driven by impressed voltage within a range in which a disclination line is always generated and no hysteresis in a voltage-transmittance characteristic is generated. As a result, a high contrast is provided, while no staining and no after-image is generated, and high response speed is accomplished. |
