PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium attaining the increase of saturation magnetic flux density Bm and the smoothening of the surface of the magnetic layer, capable of increasing reproduction output and ensuring satisfactory overwriting characteristics even in the case of a thin single magnetic layer by coating. CONSTITUTION: A filmly substrate is coated with a magnetic layer contg. Fe- based metallic magnetic powder to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. At this time, the thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.1-0.3μm and the substrate contains flat platy inorg. powder having 0.3-2.0μm average particle diameter and a plate ratio of 5-100.
