Light valve

A light valve consisting of a non-liq. crystalline material (I) and/or a mixt. of (I) with a thermotropic liq. crystal (II), the (I) being incorporated as a separate finely dispersed inclusion; two substrate surfaces with or without electrode material, whereby either both electrode surfaces are transparent or <= 1 is reflective, applied to the surfaces of the (I) or (I)+(II), or one of the two electrode surfaces may be replaced by an electron source which sprays electrons onto the electrode-free side of the material in the manner of a corona discharge and opt. two crossed polarisers between which the above layer assembly is situated, wherein the (I) is a gel consisting of (a) only one gel forming polymer, a network-forming catalyst and a solvent (mixt.) or (b) a mixt. of polymer of which /-1 is a gel-forming polymer, a network-forming catalyst and a solvent (mixt.), the light transmission of the gel being temp. dependent while the gel property is retained, and (c) a separate, finely divided and dispersed amt. of liq. crystal is embedded in the gel.
