A driving apparatus for a zoom lens barrel (19, Fig. 2), comprises a driving ring 14 for moving a lens system, means 13 for moveably supporting the driving ring along an optical axis of said lens system, a gear train 20 supported by supporting means, a power source (M, Fig. 2), provided in a camera body, means (G, Fig. 2) for transmitting torque generated by the power source to said driving ring, the torque transmitting means including the gear train, and means 40, e.g. clutch mechanism (Figs. 3, 4) or disconnecting the torque transmission path from the power source to the driving ring if a torque over predetermined value is applied to said driving ring, the disconnecting means being disposed in the gear train supported by the supporting means. <IMAGE>
