A tape cassette comprising a magnetic tape with its ends connected with splicing tape to transparent leaders fixed to a pair of reels rotatably supported inside a cassette body. A hole is formed for receiving a light-emitting device in the cassette body accommodating the magnetic tape between the reels, and a light transmission hole for allowing the rays of light from a light-emitting device facing inside the cassette main body through the light-emitting device insertion hole to transmit outside the cassette body through the tape member, on the side wall orthogonal to the tape travelling between the tape reels. A tape information display portion representing the kind of magnetic tape accommodated in the cassette body is disposed at the leader positioned between a point of intersection of a line connecting the light-emitting device insertion hole and the light transmission hole with the leader when the tape is fully wound on either one of the tape reels. Because this tape information display portion is disposed on the leader, it can be formed without being affected by the splicing tape for connecting the magnetic tape to the leader, light power reflected from the tape information display portion can be detected highly accurately by the light reception device, and tape information can be correctly detected.
