The apparatus comprises a supporting structure (50) having supporting arms (52) which are mounted on the supporting structure so as to be adjustable in height. A conveyor (60, Figure 6) is mounted on the arms and is movable in the longitudinal direction of the arms. During unloading the conveyor is moved longitudinally to a position between plates of a firing table. The arms (52) and hence the conveyor (60) are moved upwards until one of the plates is supported on the conveyor. The plate is transferred from conveyor (60) to a feed belt (74). <IMAGE>
