A cable adjusting device, eg for an accelerator cable, comprises a female element 22 having internal ratchet teeth (27, fig 5) engage with complimentary ratchet teeth (30, fig 7) on male element 28. These teeth are arranged so that movement towards the interior of the element 22 is allowed, after a predetermined force has been overcome, but movement in the reverse direction is prevented. Ends 10, 19 are fixed, for example, to an accelerator pedal and a lever of a carburettor butterfly valve respectively. Grommets, eg of rubber, fixes sheath 16, through which cable 15 extends, relative to the vehicle body. During installation the accelerator pedal is depressed to its full extent, thereby opening the valve fully, which allows the male element 28 to enter element 22 so that the effective length of the sheath 16 is shortened until an ideal length is reached. A clamp (31, fig 8) may be provided to immobilize the relative positions of elements 22, 28 before installation.
