The data head support equipment (4) includes a number of arm structures (7) which, in the case of a disc-shaped data carrier (3), extend radially from the centre to its outer edge (11). The support equipment is mounted at a distance above the data carrying surface (5), and the arm structures are fitted at equal angles to each other. The arms support a data reading unit which has at least one data head (2) for each data track, and which is mounted on the support equipment in a fixed, stationary position relative to each surface of the data carrier. Only the data carrier is moved when data is read and written.
