The method involves the activation of a signal device in a transport element, e.g. a car (10), container (12), or a lorry (14), which is detected, with its position, by a monitoring station (42) and an instruction is transferred to the monitoring station to trigger a function in it when a fault occurs in or on the transport element. The geographical position of the transport element is first determined and transmitted, after it has stopped, to the monitoring station and detected there. The instruction to trigger the function in the monitoring station is transferred when an unmonitored fault of the transport element occurs.
