Residues such as filter dust and ash from waste incineration plants which may contain hazardous materials such as heavy metals, can be bonded into a glass matrix so that such materials cannot be eluted. The residues are thermally treated with cpds. of alkali metals and elements from group 6 or 7 of the periodic table.
